The Witness

Your quiet attention is a message of its own, and today you can watch what it brings back.

The card

An old man in a grey woollen habit sits on a low stone bench under a great tree. His hands rest in his lap. A red fox stands in the grass in front of him, near enough to touch, and further off a stag grazes beside a still pool. An owl sits high in the branches, as motionless as the man.

The fox is the detail to stay with. A fox is a wary animal, yet this one has come close and stays. Nothing in the scene lures it. The man's stillness has told it something, and the fox has answered by staying. The sun hangs low and amber over the hills, and a few dry leaves drift down through the long light.

Essence

The Witness is awareness that watches without seizing. It is the part of you that can see your own thoughts and feelings as they happen and still keep its seat. Upright, it says that full attention is already a kind of action: what is truly seen is changed by being seen, and attention given without an agenda lets things show what they really are.

For today

The fox came because the man sent out calm and then waited. Attention works this way between people too. The way you look at someone, or at a problem, carries a signal, and what comes toward you is partly a reply to that signal. Today's question: what answers you when your attention asks for nothing?

Try it once, on purpose. Pick one conversation or one task and give it your plain, unhurried attention, with no plan for where it should go. Then listen to what comes back. Someone may say more than usual. A stuck task may show you its real shape.

The answer may take a while, so leave room for it. The fox did not step forward the first moment the man sat down. Let the pause after your attention be part of the attention.
