The Root

What shows above the ground is real, but it is not the whole tree; know which part is feeding which.

The card

The card is split by a single straight line: the surface of the ground. Above it stands a great oak, bare for the season, its branches spread against a deep blue sky with a pale moon. A young woman in plain white linen kneels on the grass beside the trunk and reaches one hand toward it.

Below the line the earth has been cut open like a page. The roots spread as wide as the crown above them, and at the centre one thick taproot runs straight down, glowing gold, until it fans out on grey bedrock. The only warm light in the whole scene comes from under that line.

Essence

The Root is the foundation nobody sees. Every branch, leaf and flower depends on it, and it asks for no credit. It stands for slow, unshowy work: staying connected to the people, places and truths that keep you upright. Strength, here, is measured by how deep and how wide you are held, not by how high you reach.

For today

Look at that ground line. Everything above it is what the world sees of the tree, and it is honest: the oak really is those branches. But the branches are not the oak. Today, ask: of the things people see in me, which ones are fed from my own roots, and which ones are standing on nothing?

You will be several people before tonight. Maybe a colleague, a parent, a neighbour, someone in a queue. Each of those is a true branch. Take one of them, the one you will spend most of the day in, and hold it a little away from yourself before you step into it. Trace it down: what in you is it drawing on? Patience you learned from someone? A belief you still hold? A habit you never chose?

If you find a root, step into that part of your day on purpose and let the warm light come up from below. If you find only soil, notice it and keep going. Not every branch has to reach bedrock. It helps to know which ones do.
